Freespace

Freespace is an online platform for understanding the role that place plays in defining and situating identity. The project initiates this process by asking a very simple question: Is there a place or space in your memory, your physical experience, or that you have conceived of which you feel is important? Defined not by the magnitude of history or design, these sites gain significance through the experience and actions of the individual. They are places that contain vivid, embodied memory even as time and space erode their existence, becoming an activator, a trigger, for playing out the past in unique new ways. For Future Cities, I am proposing Freespace as a public commons that lives between virtual and physical realms utilizing social networks, crowd sourcing, field kits applications and programming, to open the meaning of space and provide multiple access points for groups to push the meaning and complexity of public spaces.
