Based from a multiplicity of minute elements these sculptures are an evolving arrangement of parts. There is a constant reworking in to the subtleties of each material used; erring closer toward an inherent fragility and minimality.

To give setting to these multiplicities the work is installed with a balance of select material elements. These formations are re-configured within each space and each held in situ with a fleeting sense of permanence. Arranged under a paused tension of opposing forces, there is within each piece the implicated potential to produce an element of disruption/downfall.

Conceptually tied around a collection of politico-philosophical ideas- from Badiou, Zizek, Mouffe et al- the driving narrative of this work is a universal strife for a re-politicized arena of thought: A want for an ‘antagonistic’ self-revolutionising theatre of politics. This work is a rendition of such a reflexively utopian paradox in its unreachable state of stability.

Donguli Rock

Donguli Rock - Michael Pollard
Installation

  • Metal
  • 300 x 350 x 300 cm

Notes on artwork: The piece comprises of a rock-like weight of approx 80kg suspended above the ground. This is tied from the top of a steel rod of variable height leaning into the space and anchored to the ground from two points with a dynamic climbing rope. This results in a tensile support of three lines bearing the large suspended weight.
The counterpart to this element is a repetition of individually formed minute chalk nodes (of a potential 3,000) that span a possible trajectory of the weights implicated descent.
