CULT - Amalia Gil-Merino

CULT

Painting, Oil, Canvas, 160 x 200 cm, 2010
In an old fabric as a modern temple I imagine an actual problem like the female genital mutilation.
The Nefertiti I saw im Berlin's Neues Museum was the central focus of the work. The anonym victim wears a mask: through a timeless symbol beauty she cannot shows her pain. As the six Egyptian goodness, the women from different continents participate in the barbarism cult, a moment before the police arrive.

ANGKOR - Amalia Gil-Merino

ANGKOR

Painting, Oil, Canvas, 160 x 200 cm, 2010
The latest Cambodia’s war crimes tribunal’s news and a travel to Angkor gave me an obsession about prosecutors and innocents. I had a vision of too young Khmer soldiers with Kalashnikovs between sculptures of the powerful god Ganesha and Apsara-dancer. A girl-soldier imitated her. No witnesses, only a serpent-like hand in typical dance pose, to stop the time and change the situation.

Through a smoky background as a stage-street like scenario on asphalt a futuristic soldier in motorcycle Leather Suit with dragon emblems destroys with black ink the vinyl strokes painted by the lying figure. Another fight takes place between a yakuza and a phoenix tattooed girl like the geishas in Mizoguchi´s film. Cartoons hands and Manga- pirate-women surround the apocalyptic fight nature vs. machine, Berlin vs. Babylon, art and destruction.
