Surface Tension - Cathryn McEwen

Surface Tension

Painting, Oil, Canvas, 102 x 73 x 3 cm, 2011
My current work deals with figures in water and is a continuation of my interest in body language, emotion and narrative. My intention is to extend the concept of a portrayal of a figure using the water to express something more about them through reflection or the surface qualities; an alter ego, a deeper emotion, a secret desire, or a darker side of the person involved.

I'm in my Element

Painting, Oil, Canvas, 183 x 61 x 3 cm, 2012
My current paintings explore the juxtaposition of figure and water. There is a stillness about them that may either invite introspection, or an interpretation of the human condition.

Trust No One

Painting, Oil, Canvas, 92 x 92 x 4 cm, 2012
My current paintings explore the juxtaposition of the figure and water. The resulting portrayals perhaps reveal a darker side, an alter ego, or even a secret desire - emotions that we can relate to and recognise in ourselves, and others.

The gesture can often say more than appears. Juxtaposed with the element of water, it can say even more.

Its a jungle out there

Painting, Oil, Canvas, 73 x 73 cm, 2011
Waterworks is my latest series of paintings created while in residence at Ondarte. These works explore the combination of figures and water, and are a continuation of my interest in body language, emotion and narrative. My intention is to extend the concept of a portrayal of a figure using the water to express something more about them through a reflection, or through the surface qualities of the water, or through the gesture of the figure. The resulting combination has the capacity to invoke a deeper emotion, or portray an alter ego, a secret desire, or a darker side of the person involved.
