Pioneer heroes are boys and girls, members of national communist children's movement in the Soviet Union, who performed the feat. Most of them lost their lives in the years of the Soviet Republic and the Great Patriotic War (World War II). Images of pioneer heroes were widely used in Soviet propaganda as an example of high morals. Their names and faces were well-known throughout the Soviet Union. Biographies of pioneer heroes were mythologized in numerous books and movies. The images of pioneer heroes were widely spread over school facilities and children's camps.
