THE HERO WITHIN THE HERO WITHIN by melanie cleary
Photo / Digital Graphics
I explored questions of physical identity, beauty and dignity where people literally and figuratively recreated themselves through their ‘performance’ and where their self-presentation created a curious dignity that I found disarming. Through my explorations of this world, I came to see my own role as something of an extension of the participants’ own strategies for self-display. Rather than seeing the images as ‘grotesque’ or ‘sexually charged’, I was using another medium and context to ‘show off’ their bodies to a new audience.

WESTERN MEAT MARKET WESTERN MEAT MARKET by
Live Media/Performance
The meat is a conductor of entire worlds with whom we seek some form of dialogue, of negotiation. I tell this short-circuit, the magic of touch and recognition of the presence of the others, and of something elusive but undeniable, through interaction design. I have a low-voltage electrode in the arm. The other pole is attached to the foil that covers the table. When I touch the flesh, this is a conductor and the circuit closes, sending a signal to a digital synthesizer that translates it into sound. Nothing can help us in this journey of discovery, where we have to venture drained and free, even if you exorcise your trip on a table supported by piles of books.

"To be or not to be?" The question is made by remixing the words of Sir Laurence Olivier in his Hamlet. In the performance the most vulgar tools at the base of interaction design and digital entertainment are incorporated within a traditional aesthetic vision that gives them absolutely new and unifying meaning. Technically the performance was designed to use a webcam connected to a real-time software that tracks my movements by associating them with sounds and turning my body into a synthesizer. At the same time my image, projected live on screen behind me, interacts with 3D graphics in order to obtain a kind of augmented reality. The concept behind the performance is the desire of melting togheter two very distant languages: Shakespeare and a video game. So, the onanism of playstation...Read all

Boxes Boxes by JeongHo Park
Installation / Sculpture
Notes on artwork: The box has a story. A story is separated into four groups (Music, Media, People and Sport). The four groups mean that important things in the media world. The media world influences peoples directly or indirectly. 'Boxes' simply shows this phenomenon in realtime. A audience build with a box like a toy. And then the movie play on a front face of the box. Simply they can see the movie and build more complex structure like a apratment. Also when a box approach an other box, the story in the box is changed to same group(Music, Media, People and Sport). And then audience can compose some stroys from the present situation. Though the rule of change is simple, when the 12 boxes are organized, more different storys can be found and composed.

“Shall We?" presents the artist playing dinner host to a party of four. While the guests freely talk, raise glasses and motion to pass food, the occasional passer-by and the signage surrounding disrupt this otherwise familiar scene. Set in a lifestyle store to a score of ambient muzak, Patel establishes a disjunction between the participant’s actions and their actuality. This private dinner party is public. There is no food, so if one wills, they must pretend. Furthering Patel’s interest in “play” as a means to examine contemporary experience and situations, in “Shall We?” Patel utilises the artifice inherent in both the setting and the performances to subtly question contemporary social conventions. Meccas for ready-made “better living”, the lifestyle store is an anywhere...Read all

Untitled (Medusa) Untitled (Medusa) by Lynette Bester
Installation / Sculpture
Untitled (Medusa), was originally a sculpture created in 2005. The violin was bought from the University of Cape Town, and was then disassembled from its known and recognisable whole through smashing it before a passing street audience using a ten pound hammer. The fragments were collected and originally fastened together using brightly coloured elastic bands, banal and perishable everyday objects in relation to a previously respected object. Medusa refers to both the feared goddess Medusa, and the fallen ship Medusa in Theodore Gericault!s painting, an iconic painting of imbalance of power and instinctual survival and evoked by the vessel form. The elastic bands have long since perished and the sculpture achieved its full temporal state. Revisiting this sculpture in 2009 , new solutions had...Read all

Higgs Bridge Higgs Bridge by Jonathan Gillie

Produced for Race For the Prize group show, part of the British Art Show Fringe. Higgs Bridge started life as a sketch of a mysterious looking shed/beach hut I encountered near Camber Sands. I started working along the lines that something fantastical or esoteric could be taking place inside. After some time adding and subtracting elements to the animation I read an article about the search for the Higgs Boson particle at Cern. The original animation then morphed into an imagined machine, used for entering into, or bridging the gap between observed and unobserved space. Entrances, exits, pathways and the mapping of esoteric mechansims there within seem to be themes that reoccur in my work.

Troblion is an autonomous spherical robot that rolls in an oval partially irrigated sandbox. Following very simple programmed rules the sphere already creates a great variety of different motion characteristics that we easily start to interpret as emotions. Troblion seems to be alive. While it is rolling, it builds a layer of hardened sand on its outer surface. In this way Troblion is able to change its appereance. Its naked artificial skin gets hidden in a natural structure. But the more its layer is growing, the heavier it gets. Finally as Troblion is not able to move any more, it needs to shell the sand off by deforming its silicon skin. Not till then it is able to move again. The fragments which remain from the sand layer are leftover pieces of gathered dust which indicate Troblion's existence...Read all

The circle, as simplicity and perfect element, material and ideal at the same time, in this case becomes a symbol bearer of a shared essence, experienced by random characters as a pulsating reality. It comes to life and leaves that imaginary theater in which coins and washers dance, as improvised dancers in rehearsal, it intrudes reality and imposes itself as a new element, discovery, revelation. The circle, as a boundary to our knowledge and interpretation of reality, continuously transmutes, in every transition, frame by frame, in a cascade of images, each capturer of an instant. The spaces created in the fragmented and reconstituted vision, hold the secret of silence.

There is a tendency in my work to synthesize fragments of the reality, the future and the emotions. Structures and colors in the painting are combined to reflect this intention. There is also a preference for geometric shapes, using a broad range of shades and thick textures with an absence of brush stroke. The paintings are fully self-contained and a symmetrical impression of balance is present which coexist with the free will of the color vibration, encouraging the breaking of paradigms and elevate the viewer souls.

It's a place where man lives and relates himself to surfaces, to objects, that are all around him, that he dragged to represent his own non-verbal expression. Our lived daily places constitutes a link between inner and outer personal worlds, so they serve a vital function, like our skin, giving us back an uniform image of ourselves, defending us by external intrusions, permitting us to be in contact with others. Through this action, I try to rebuild my inner world: it's a balanced duel, matter against matter, up to fuse myself with it.

This is one of my works about 'complementarity'. We see an extraordinary correspondence between the man and the statue, and a complementarity of the two heads, the arms, the carried objects, the directions of the sights, the specular folds of the clothes and, mostly, the two colors. The figure of the man enlarges downward, laying his dark shoes on the ground; the statue narrows upward, pointing the brilliant torch towards the sky. The sandals of the man, not well poised, trample on a two-dimensional, horizontal, long, serial grid of metal, while the statue (which wears sandals but we don't see them) stands on a three-dimensional, vertical, tall, elegant pedestal of stone bricks. The dimensions of the statue with the pedestal are exactly equal to the dimensions of the figure of the man. The...Read all
