I make paintings of cardboard models.
These makeshift constructions are often on the point of falling apart, opening to reveal the space inside the form and the process of construction.
They are whitewashed or crudely painted against their backdrops, negating contours and edges, giving the impression of still lives caught within action paintings.
The models are shaped by a desire to create something singular, irregular, eluding perspective and geometry…Something primitive, totemic, pathetic, …on the edge of disintegration or collapse…relating to both art and life.
In contrast to the making of these constructions, the process of making the painting is slow and deliberate – gradually establishing the form and its relationship to the space around it, exploring painterly tensions between illusionism and more direct mark-making that references abstraction.
The resulting images veer between literal depictions of the actual models and imagined forms and spaces that explore a less tangible vision.
