Ikigai

'Ikigai' is the name of a new series of artworks which aim to reflect this particular moment of my life.

Ikigai (生き甲斐, pronounced [ikiɡai]) is a Japanese concept that means "a reason for being." It is similar to the French phrase Raison d'être. Everyone, according to Japanese culture, has an ikigai. Finding it requires a deep and often lengthy search of self. Such a search is important to the cultural belief that discovering one's ikigai brings satisfaction and meaning to life.[1] Examples include work, hobbies and raising children.[2]

Indeed, I’m currently in the process of adopting a child.

The wait is the hardest of all, because you have an awful lot of questions, hopes, and fears. But at the same time this is a moment of reflection, as a man and as an artist: what does it mean to become a father? Is this the ultimate ‘reason for being’?

The idea of transforming my mixed feelings into a work of art has come to me through meditation.

I’ve immediately feel the urge to paint my ‘Ikigai’ by the use of sumi ink and Iwa Enogu pigments.

The way ink and pigments merge together with water is a reference to amniotic fluids (conception) as well as human aura (the encounter of two souls and two destinies).

Thank you for your review.

Kind regards,
Mauro De Giorgi
