Biography
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work strives to:
depict the grace, wonder, and complexity of the colors surrounding us
in order to:
communicate the thrill, sublime, and awe that the raw elements provoke
so that each of us may:
focus on a momentary experience, unburden ourself temporarily, and allow us to savor a simple yet profound reconnection to nature and the emotions that constitute our core.
My paintings are large-scale, expressionistic landscapes and element studies
with a focus on color fields and architectural negative space.
My paintings recreate form with a gradual build-up of color
with the use of oils, acrylics and occasional mixed media.
Born and raised in the Midwest,
I relocated to Portland in 2002 and have loved every moment of it.
Studies in art history and Dutch roots steeped in a rich,
cultural history inspired me to begin exploring my own work.
A Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy has deepened my exploration
of internal causality as well as my pursuit of what can be known externally,
both of which play large roles in my work.
