Vanitas Vanitatum

Vanitas Vanitatum

In picture the “vanitas” is a kind of symbolic picture. In bible verse” vanitas vanitatun et omnia vanitas” open and close the speech of Qohelet in the ecclesiast book:”vanity of the vanity, everything is vanity”. The human nature is ephemeral, precarious and imperfect. Vanity has assumed new means, tied up to narcissism and boasting. Instead, the time of the existence is always the same. In an atmosphere of attenuate melancholy an immovable and surreal vision insinuates: a female figure, made of a lumpy and abraded subject, it alludes to the brittleness of the external beauty. The symbols of time appear: the wrecks of an old clock, the skull, the goose. Two children of indefinite identity peep out from a paper fund with leaves and roses, symbols of the frailty of the passions and of the age’s fading. The acid green detaches on the monochrome tonalities of the neutral grey: between the drawn figures, but not entirely finished, fragments of overlapped papers emerge, with clippings of newspapers, tissue papers, pages of notebooks with notes, numbers, calculations and torn writings. The incisive and black lines meet with the most delicate signs, vanished with pencil, and with the reflexes of the gold. In this unstable equilibrium of symbols something appears on the surface, something that refers to a remote past… and to a prediction of the future.
