Quel che resta del mare
These photographs represent the desire to react to a difficult time in my life and to rejoin myself through an intimate relationship with the sea. I am a sicilian woman and all my work is based on memory: filtering out the memories of a lifetime, collecting and photographing different little objects found on the beaches, as if they were pieces of a puzzle I wish I could reconstruct in order to find a deep sense of inner unity and completeness. Calcareous skeletons, shells, wood and roots are mixed with plastic, metallic and glazed waste and they are all sculpted by time and water. The remains of the sea is therefore a denunciation: we are emptying our Mare Nostrum, threatening his biodiversity. It is necessary to turn waste into economical resources and to return to our sea, with its enormous historical and cultural heritage, the dignity and richness that deserves.
