Inaugurated in November 2009 with the Chief & Chic! exhibition, U-MAN Contemporary Art/ Space/ Project was set up as a self-run exhibition venue with a flair for radical experimentation. This was stated by the leitmotif of the exhibition: the naked truth about the relationship between body and power: a concept expressed by artworks-well-rooted in the present, in all its forms and deviances.
Far from being a space which only accepts the latest generations or a market-oriented venue, this non-gallery is ready to host and explore the latest works of Sarenco- perhaps the most irreverent
protagonist of Visual Poetry, an artistic movement that emerged in Italy around 1963.

Sarenco is more than an artist: he is an all-round poet. Aside from his works in the field of visual arts, which have been shown in major exhibitions such as Documenta and the Venice Biennale, he has worked on projects involving sound poetry, performance- cinema (his Collage was presented
in the XLII Venice FIlm Festival) and the interaction with different cultures. He has also worked in- publishing writing monographs- and artist’s books- as well as founding a number of humerous avant-garde magazines, from Amodulo (1968-1970) and the three editions of Lotta poetica (1971-1987) to Factotum art (1977-1979) and the Annali di Poesia Visiva. These timeless
and disruptive periodicals- can be considered the extraordinary battlefield where the main exponents of international visual poetry fought alongside with Sarenco.

The exhibition, whose name pays homage to Harald Szeemann, showcases the artist’s recent works (2009)- focusing on the re-interpretation of some of his milestone pieces. These works are set in Plexiglass boxes and altered thought he addition of the most varied items, thus creating a
witty anthology of the artist’s motto. It is a way to recall that good ideas never die, as well as a chance to take a look at the past and amicably revisit it.
The exhibition catalogue, published by Fondazione Sarenco and including texts by
Klaus Bruderholz and Duccio Dogheria, will be presented at the opening.

A fifty-copy artist-signed limited edition of the U-MAN 01 catalogue will be distributed.
Visitors will have the chance to see and buy the UMAN-Box, featuring artists’ multiples by Veronica
Bellei, Emanuele Benedetti, Sara Giordani, and Sarenco.

Two special events are taking place during the run of the exhibition: a preview of the first book of Sarenco’s comprehensive catalogue, featuring Adriano Parise’s collection and texts by Achille Bonito Oliva and the screening of Sarenco’s Safari (1990), which won the Il cinema del deserto award (1993, Kino Kepha, Parigi) and was bought and screened by the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

U-MAN originates from an idea of Veronica Bellei, Emanuele Benedetti and Sara Giordani.
