Twenty Italian photojournalists gathered in this exhibition with excerpts of their reportages which have highlighted the value of volunteering in Italy and worldwide. The collected works investigate the phenomenon of volunteering as we have known it and lived it during the past 10 years: from emergency situations to environmental disasters, from
hospitals to therapeutic realities, from the discomfort/degradation of living to that of social disintegration.

In 2011 about 20% of Europeans have devoted part of their time to volunteer activities, alone or along with the many associations in the area. The show features a wide selection of images that emphasize the importance of such activities and wants to pay a tribute to those individuals who are committed on a daily basis, to facilitate their work
and encourage others to engage with them. An exhibition that aims to make an active contribution to the spread of the culture of the gift and raise awareness of the value of volunteering as an engine of social development and a fundamental element of the democratic living.

"Volunteering is one of the fundamental dimensions of active citizenship and democracy, in which European values such as solidarity and non-discrimination take concrete form and contribute to the harmonious development of European societies. The "voluntary activities" are all those undertaken in each person's own free will, choice and motivation and with a non-profit interest. These activities benefit the individual, the communities and the society as a whole. They are also a means by which individuals and associations address the needs and the human, social, environmental or intergenerational concerns".
