forms of collecting
Festivals, Italy, Ravenna, Faenza, 14 June 2010
The fourth edition of the festival of Contemporary art will be entitled forms of collecting/forme della committenza. This was announced on stage at Teatro Masini by the scientific board (Angela Vettese, Carlos Basualdo and Pier Luigi Sacco). Together with Daniel Buren, the main guest speaker of the closing talk at OPERE/works, the third edition of the festival of Contemporary art, they emphasized the central role that artists play when it comes to discussing art, and the new perspective that the 2011 edition of the festival will provide for looking at artworks. The third edition confirmed the festival’s position as a top international event dedicated to reflection and debate about contemporary art. More than 100 speakers from all over the world were invited to talk about artworks and their role in our lives and in society, involving the public in a fascinating journey into the ideas which make experiencing art a possibility. The festival was a resounding success, in terms of its popularity, with almost 20,000 visitors, and also because it involved the entire city of Faenza, which enriched the festival with 80 fringe events. The high quality of the debates also contributed to the event’s success.

Carlos Basualdo emphasized that: the festival produces an important kind of social relationship between art and the public. This happens because the public is here, as are the artists, who will always be the focus of everything we do. We would like to thank everybody who took part in this reflection on the position of artworks in contemporary culture.

For Pier Luigi Sacco, the extraordinary thing which struck the foreign guests was the atmosphere at the festival. The social and urban qualities of the area where the festival took place were fundamental for the success of the recent third edition. The importance of making people feel welcome and arranging meetings, debate and reflection cannot be underestimated. This is something which we have always focused on and which should become the driving force for growth in our country.

For Angela Vettese the innovative feature of this edition was the increasingly in-depth discussion of the themes dealt with in the debates. Many of the international guests noted that there is no similar kind of festival anywhere else in the world. This should encourage us to insist on the unique nature of the festival and, quite probably, to transform it into an event on two levels. One level should involve the face-to-face meeting of people here, whether as part of an official debate or during a more relaxed, informal occasion, where in actual fact the debate can continue. The other level, which has already been developed, involves offering continuity throughout the year, with both meetings and publications, in order to leave a long-lasting trace of these wonderful events.
