Report of 2013 Present Art Festival
On July 14, 2013, the V edition of the Present Art Festival was opened. The Festival, which was held at the wonderful Shanghai Pudong National Library, has become a fundamental event for contemporary art in Shanghai: it was enjoyed by many visitors and was highly praised by critics and high-profile personalities who attended the opening ceremony.
The Festival, which received the patronage of the Chinese Ministry of Culture, the Italian Cultural Institute in Shanghai, the Spanish consulate in Shanghai, the Piedmont regional government, the Liguria regional government, the Genoa province government, the Genoa Municipality, the Florence Municipality and the Bilbao Municipality, will last until the end of September in the futuristic halls of Wison Art Museum, funded by bioengineering company Wison Group.
In addition to the many visitors who this year, as usual, visited the exhibition space, the opening ceremony was a very important event for the city of Shanghai, thanks to the presence of some of the main personalities of Chinese authorities and Consulates of various countries: among those were Shanghai Pudong National Library director, Mr. Wang Ren; the Shanghai Pudong Culture and Art Guidance Center director; the Wison Art Museum director; Italian Cultural Institute vice director, professor G. Casacchia; Culture Officer at the Consulate General of Spain in Shanghai, Dr. Carolina Ballester Bouyahia.
During the opening ceremony, the institutions representatives have awarded the Florence-Shanghai Prize winners who attended the Festival; furthermore, two of the artists who participated in the 2012 edition have donated two of their artworks to the Shanghai Municipality: they were Spanish José Ángel Palao and Italian Stefano Ridolfi. The artworks were handed to the Municipality delegate by professor Casacchia and Dr. Ballester Bouyahia.
Mexican General consul Rolando García, after visiting the Festival, heartily complimented the artists and the event; the Chinese public also appreciated the artworks created by the Festival artists, and the Shanghai Television has shot a documentary about the 2013 Present Art Festival.
The event catalogue, available at our website www.presentcontemporaryart.com is enriched by a preface written by Spanish General consul Gonzalo Ortiz and by an introduction written by Paolo Sabbatini, director of the Cultural Promotion Area of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The fifth edition of the Present Art Festival also dedicated an entire section to the Florence-Shanghai Prize, and exhibited the artworks of the artists who placed first, second and third in each of the three categories of the competition: Painting, Sculpture/Installation and Photography.
