Biography
From turning individuals into an army of mindless zombie consumers, to an overall feeling of emptiness brought on by an overstimulation of capitalistic desires, much has been said about the effects of advertising to everyone.
Now, imagine what working in an industry that commercializes and commodifies creativity can do to an artist’s psyche. Nestor Ong has been an adman for more than 20 years, working in big ad agencies like JWT, McCann and Saatchi & Saatchi, and while he did not necessarily become a psycho killer, the stress has driven him to become a psycho artist.
Nestor embraced the principles of surrealism and applied it to his work. He describes his style as “Freudian,” and seeks to create images and visuals that lean toward provocative more than decorative. It is not that pretty to look at, but it speaks.
You don’t just look at it. You listen.
In 2009, Nestor Ong decided to apply the aesthetics of Steampunk to push his works further.
What used to be mere surrealism is now a twisted merging
of the macabre, the strange, and corroded metal.
And he’s quite pleased with his experiments.
