De Stefano Maria - “Desma” , born November 25, 1952 in Cimitile (Naples), since 1970 she lives in Catanzaro (Calabria) and realizes her works using all possible textile materials mixing them with metal, wood, ceramics and other unusual items.
She is attracted by materials expressive strength and chromatic games. Sometimes she makes her creations following a project, others she creates casually following the inspiration of warping (her new painting technique). She makes visitors feel emotively involved because of her perfect knowledge of traditions and manual techniques. Recently she began to use broom fiber and silk, locally produced by a craftsman from Cortale which uses the traditional technique.
Her favorite techniques are tapestries where, with several nodes as “soumak”, “chine”, “pointilè”, she’s able to make textiles installations and miniatures.
She is a contemporary artist who uses visual arts exchange to maintain her artistic identity.
Founder of Calabria Textile Association, she organizes exhibitions at Regional and International levels; Trainings for craftswomen, historical and cultural researches about textile materials.
