Biography

Jay Yao (Jose Campos III) was raised with one foot in Vancouver, and the other in Manila. Yao did his thesis photography exhibit on Canadian-Asian identity at Hampshire College. After college Yao moved to New York to further his skills as an artist focusing mainly in photography.

Yao has had numerous solo exhibitions. at Hiraya Gallery (Manila), Museum Pambata (Manila), Silverlens (Manila), Tixe Artspace (New York), Manifesto Gallerie (Manila), and quite recently in Artinformal (Manila). He has been sponsored by the Canadian and Mexican embassy in his earlier days.

In 2005, Yao represented the Philippines for the Goethe-Insitut project “Art Connexions: SYD - MLA - KUL.” His current body of work, the “Homecoming” series, was nominated and short-listed for the Ateneo Art Awards in 2014.

In 2015, to raise funds and awareness for Teach for the Philippines, Yao, Celestina, and B+C collaborated together to do a pop-up show selling functional art for charity. His group exhibitions include “New Natives”, Lightbombs (Hong Kong), “Art Connexions: SYD - MLA - KUL” at the Australian Center of Photography (Sydney), and quite recently in Pablo Galleries (Manila).

Yao is a member of the Camera Club Philippines, and is an alumnus of Hampshire College, Parsons, and Columbia University. Yao spends the majority of his time in Metro-Manila pursuing his passion in both graphic design, and fine art. He is an avid typographer.
