About
The internet overwhelms us with images. Entangled in their own referential codes and iconography, sliding past daily before everyone's eyes. The question how to react or respond to this, is the central theme in vanderbeke's work.

He gathers images, forges them into collages and then transforms these into paintings. In his compositions the male figure, often nude, is always primarily present. This male figure is a reference to art history and the current culture of “ the capitalized body”. This input melted together with sexual symbols and contemporary icons creates an imperfect harmony that challenges the viewer to look closer and question the frictions that arise from these collages. Text also plays a major, more compositional, role in his work.

In between the graphic, industrial perfection and the human, sometimes unsteady, executive hand of the painter, between the huge panels, the bright colours, between the old and new elements, the possibility for new interpretations and humour is created.
