Biography
Encompassing photography, painting, sculpture and installation, my practice concerns representation and identity; through addressing the portrayal of the contemporary queer narrative, I evoke questions of protest, commemoration and the staging of the social memorial. Central to the work lies a need to challenge contemporary ideals of queer representation and raise awareness for issues facing the queer community that may otherwise be omitted.
In 2015, 271 transgender women were murdered, with crimes against the transgender community rising by 15%. Only 16% of crimes were recorded in the media. My most recent series Monument to the Invisible, blurs monument and protest, combining sculpture, materiality and photography in order to raise concerns on the representation of the contemporary transgender narrative. Such uses of sculpture create a physical manifestation of loss and remembrance whilst challenging notions of violence and invisibility.
