Biography
The intention, through my work, is to convey a story of human experience. Beginning with the notion that all people share basic human traits that connect us, such as compassion, love, fear, and sadness, the representational aspect of the work seeks to create an understanding between the viewer and the subject; foster a relationship between the two. The work invites the viewer to see beyond the obvious to the narrative undercurrents of the story being told, seen in the subtleties of details, metaphorical elements and obvious props.
My portrait pieces move beyond a likeness to encapsulate a “moment in the life of…”, that individual. Light and color create form; expression and setting create mood. This is the theater of my work. The portraits are not simply a “sitting”. They are living experiences of those individuals, telling their story in a way that draws recognition, compassion and affinity from the viewer. Each has its own beautiful, tragic tale. It is my hope that I may do justice to the subjects and convey the messages of their human existences.
